Auckland Pride Festival
Auckland Pride is the country’s largest, running for the whole of February with free and paid events across the city: performances, exhibitions, talks, parties and community gatherings. The Auckland Rainbow Parade is the best-known night, drawing big crowds to Ponsonby Road.
- Getting there: Ponsonby Road closes for the parade, so plan to walk or bus in. Arrive early for a good spot.
- Tip: many smaller events book out. Follow the festival programme when it is released, usually in early summer.
Wellington Pride Festival
Wellington’s festival follows in March, with events across the city over about two weeks. It is a good choice if you want a festival that feels close-knit and walkable.
Christchurch Pride Festival
Christchurch Pride runs across March in Ōtautahi, with community, arts and social events. Qtopia is a good local contact for rainbow support in the South Island.
Smaller Pride events around Aotearoa
Many towns hold their own Pride events, picnics and dances, often outside the big summer festival season. Local rainbow groups are the best way to find them, for example Rainbow Hub Waikato or Rainbow Wellington.
Planning your Pride trip
- Book early. Accommodation near Ponsonby fills up in February.
- Look for rainbow-friendly places to stay and eat. Browse the Rainbow Directory for businesses that welcome rainbow customers.
- Know the flags. Our guide to Pride flags explains what each one means.
- Look after yourself. Free, confidential support is available from OutLine on 0800 688 5463, 6pm–9pm daily.
For businesses: getting involved in Pride
Pride is a good time to show you welcome rainbow customers, but visitors notice when support is only for February. See how to make your business rainbow-friendly, then add your business to the Rainbow Directory so people can find you all year.
